In 2008, my grandfather passed away, and I inherited a collection of books, tools, woodworking supplies, and a single box of keepsakes I assembled from his garage. One of the items I'd tucked away was a Victorian chocolate box, taped shut, a makeshift home for 35 hand-drawn illustrations on antique calling cards.

I again stowed them away in varied storage spaces as I moved back and forth across the country, but in the summer of 2026, I revisited the drawings and finally began some archival research. 

I discovered that although they were original artworks and unmarked on the back side, they were a near-perfect surrogate to the 1890 Teuila fortune-telling card set designed by Isobel Strong. Was what I found a project to make a homemade version, possibly started by my great-grandmother or great-aunts? Or was it some found prototype? We have no way to be sure (at least not yet) but I did know that it was my job to commemorate these wonderful relics.

I located Isobel’s instruction manual and determined that her final set included 45 cards. I contrasted my partial set with her intentions, unpacked my watercolors, and illustrated the missing iconography on my own.
